NENÉU LIBERALQUINO

He was born in Canhotinho, a city in the state of  Pernambuco, northeast of Brazil.
At the age of seven, Nenéu began to sing in local Radio and TV programmes stimulated by his father, winning, only to be mentioned, the First Northeast Competition for Child Singers, supported by the Northeast Rede Globo Broadcasting and produced by Renato Phaelante and J.Raposo.

When he was 16 years old, he became interested in playing  acoustic guitar, influenced by the guitarist Manoel Barbosa, a friend of his parents, and by the Brazilian Guitar School personified by Paulinho Nogueira, Baden Powell, among others and, for doing that, he had to overcome his physical limitations and develop his own technique in order to accomplish his desire, becoming, thus, a self-taught guitarist and keeping himself faithful to the brazilian style of acoustic guitar playing.

His academic build-up came from Berklee College of Music (Boston - USA), where he majored in composition, graduating in 1989. He studied conducting with maestro David Callahan, music master by the University of Massachusetts, and composition with Thomas McGah, music master by Boston University and commissioned composer of the Harvard Musical Association, Massachusetts Council for the Arts e M.I.T Concert Band.
 
In his home country, he also took courses in conducting, harmonic analysis and composition. He is also a graduate in Languages by the Federal University of Pernambuco. He was the conductor for the Guitar Camerata of Experimental Music Center (SESC- SÃO PAULO) and also worked as a choir conductor. since July of 2002, he is the official conductor of the Symphonic Band of the City of Recife, his hometown, where he has also been ministering several traditional and jazz harmony, and arranging classes.

As a performer he has released 2 CDs. The first in 1994, through the label polydisc/sony music, produced by Zé da Flauta. And the second in 1996, through the label GHA RECORDS (a high prestige European label, specialized in guitar music). He appeared in many music festivals in Brazil and abroad. Among them, ART&SOUL FESTIVAL (Los Angeles, 1999), the MONESTIÈS (Toulouse, 1999), the 8º Guitar Fesival (Lyon, 1997), I International Special Arts Festival (Izmir - Turquia) and the opening show for the INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF CULTURE OF PEACE (UNESCO - Paris), as the only Brazilian artist to perform. In Brazil he performed at many important events, such as Projeto Pixinguinha (Northern & mid-west regions), Cantorias Nordestinas (RJ) and II Festival Latino-Americano de Artes Sem Barreiras (SP)

His 3rd CD, ACQUALUZ, the first with his trio, was released late in 2002. With this album, he toured through five cities of Pernambuco, as part of the “Instrumental Project” (SESC-PE). Among other events, there are: TOM BRASIL (Bank of Brazil), Garanhuns Winter Festival (PE), Malakoff Tower Instrumental Project (PE),Projeto Instrumental de Fernando de Noronha” (PE), INSTRUMENTAL IN CONCERT (PE), “Projeto VILLA-LOBOS” (Clube do Choro - Brasília).

He also worked as musical director, arranger and performer of the CD “ALMA DE TUPI” (1999) from singer Teca Calazans.  Musical director of: 1st release of guitarist Cláudio Almeida; 4 releases from singer Gonzaga Leal (“O OLHAR BRASILEIRO - 2000, “Minha Adoração” - A Tribute to Nelson Ferreira-2002, “E SENTIRÁS O MEU CUIDADO“ - Singing Capiba-2005,  “E O NOSSO MÍNIMO É PRAZER” - 2007); the most recent release from  Maurício Cavalcanti - “Além das Fronteiras do Universo”(2006), where he also sang and played acoustic guitar. As an arranger and performer, he also work on the release from composer Zé Rocha, “LUAS, LOAS E LENDAS” - 2000.  Recently, one of his compositions, “Valsa pro Manoelito”, was published by FINGERSTYLE MAGAZINE  (number 15 - 2006).

In 2002 e 2004, he took part in the I and the II LATIN AMERICAN CONFERENCE OF ARRANGERS AND CONDUCTORS OF SYMPHONIC BANDS, in Tatuí (SP) and since 2005, he is the Musical Director and Conductor for the CARNIVAL MUSIC COMPETITION OF PERNAMBUCO, sponsored by City Hall (Mayor’s Office). From these competitions, 2 CDs were released under his direction, with the winning compositions. The first was released on February 09 of 2006, when 100 years of “FREVO” were celebrated, and the second on February 06 of 2007.
