SYMPHONIC BAND OF THE CITY OF RECIFE - PERNAMBUCO

Created in October 7th of 1958 by the Mayor Pelópidas da Silveira, the band started off with 34 musicians. Today it counts with a total of 78 professional musicians, technicians, production managers and administrators.

Initially created to accompany civic and cultural events, the band made its first concert on February 1st of 1959 conducted by Geraldo Menucci. Since then, several maestros have led the band, such as Lourival Oliveira, Antônio Albuquerque, Luiz Caetano,  José Genuíno, Júlio Rocha,  Ademir Araújo, Edson Rodrigues, Ricardo Normando and Maestro Duda. Today, the official conductor and artistic director is maestro Nenéu Liberalquino and the assistant conductor is Adelmo Apolônio.

Under the leadership of maestro Nenéu since july/2002, the band has been going through a process of consolidation of artistic growth and prestige inside the community and the media (newspapers, radio and TV). Even the addition of the word “symphonic” to the band’s name (in the beginning it was only The Band of the City of Recife) is an expressive indication of its evolution. Under his command, the band redefined its artistic profile, systematically incorporating to its repertoir, compositions of all sorts, from popular to classical, through jazz and movie themes. Besides this, he restructured the instrumentation, increasing the flute section, inserting an euphonium, an acoustic bass and an Eb alto clarinet to re-establish balance among the sections.

The public competition in 2002 held by The City Hall of Recife, to which the BSCR belongs, was another significant point in this restructuring, since 24 new musicians were nominated: 0boe (02), flute (04), Bassoon (01), Alto sax(01), euphonium (01), trumpet (02), tuba (01), acoustic bass (01), clarinet (04), french horns (02) and percussion (05).

Nowadays, the Band has an agenda of an average of 40 concerts from March through December, and performing its official concert on every last Wednesday of every month at “Teatro do Parque”, its headquarters.

Always present at the best cultural and musical events, the Band has received many awards. Among them, the following deserve mention:

- Vice-champion of the Band competition commemorating the 139th year of the newspaper “Diário de Pernambuco”, in 1964;

- Champion of 1st Band Tournament of the State of Pernambuco, promoted by the State Secretary of Education, in 1977;

- 2nd place on The National Band Championship, promoted by FUNARTE in 1978, which finally drew the country’s attention to its existence.

Thus, the Symphonic Band of the City of Recife can no longer be viewed as a city band, but as a living patrimony of the whole State of Pernambuco.
